Profile
The Severn Deanery is part of NHS South West the Strategic Health Authorities and working in tandem with colleagues in the Peninsula Deanery oversees junior doctor training in the largest geographical area in the SHA structure – stretching from Land’s End to Tewkesbury. The Severn Deanery is responsible for the planning, commissioning and management of postgraduate medical and dental education and training in Somerset, Avon, Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire. The deanery patch serves a population of approximately 4 million. It has a healthcare workforce in excess of 70,000, with a breadth of learning and working environments, including some of the largest teaching hospitals nationally and some of the smallest rural primary care trusts.
There are over 2,000 trainees at any one time. The span is from Taunton in the South to Cheltenham in the North, Bristol in the West and Swindon in the East. The deanery covers a spread of approximately, 85 miles North to South and 40 miles East to West. With Bristol located relatively centrally in the footprint and with the largest concentration of trainees (University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and North Bristol NHS Trust are the two major Teaching Hospitals) many trainees chose to locate themselves in Bristol or the immediate Bristol area. All the other Trusts (with the possible exception of Yeovil) are easily commutable on a daily basis with the excellent motorway network both North and South (M5) and East and West (M4).
