Location and hospitals in the trust

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals works as one teaching hospital across two sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. These sites also include the Royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital and the Sussex Eye Hospital and the Hurstwood Park Regional Centre for Neurosciences.

Profile

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals is the regional teaching hospital providing general acute services to Brighton and Hove City and Mid Sussex and more specialist services, including neurosciences, paediatrics, cardiac, cancer, renal and HIV, to patients from across Sussex and the south east of England.

We work with our partner medical school and Brighton and Sussex Universities to undertake leading edge research and the education and training of the health professionals of the future.

Our ambition is to become a leading UK teaching hospital; to lead clinically and academically, treat the most difficult and complex cases and strive for excellence in our local services. We want to be known for the quality and safety of our clinical services and for treating our patients and their families and each other with kindness and compassion.

The Consultant role at BSUH

We are looking for an individual who is an outstanding clinician and leader. There are many opportunities provided by working in an acute teaching hospital with a strong commitment to clinical excellence, teaching and research, high quality patient experience, top quartile performance in outcomes and efficiency, and good staff morale. In return we expect our Consultants to lead by example and use every opportunity to help us improve what we do and strengthen our reputation.

What we do

BSUH is the regional teaching hospital working across two sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. The Brighton campus includes the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital and the Sussex Eye Hospital, and the Haywards Heath campus includes the Hurstwood Park Regional Centre for Neurosciences.

We provide general acute services to our local populations in and around the City of Brighton and Hove, Mid Sussex and the western part of East Sussex and more specialised and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the south east of England.

Both hospitals provide many of the same acute services for their local populations. In addition, the Princess Royal is our centre for elective surgery and the Royal Sussex County Hospital is our centre for emergency and critical care. Our specialised and tertiary services include neurosciences, paediatrics, cardiac, cancer, renal, infectious diseases and HIV medicine. We are currently developing our capability as the designated major trauma centre for the region.

We treat over half a million patients each year. Working as one hospital across two sites, and playing to the strengths of both, gives the flexibility to develop services which meet the needs of our patients at different stages of their treatment and care.

Central to our ambition is our role as developing academic health sciences centre, a provider of high quality teaching, and a host hospital for cutting edge research and innovation; and on this we work with our partner, Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Postgraduate Deanery and our local Universities.

We also work in close partnership with our local GPs and commissioners to ensure that local health services are provided and improved in ways which best meet the needs of our patients and their families.

Our Priorities

There are many priorities and improvements that we wish to make but of these there are three that will define our development over the coming years:

  • being research active with our partner Medical School, niche and deep rather than widely spread, in the areas of oncology, neurosciences, infectious diseases, ageing and paediatrics;
  • leading on postgraduate multi-disciplinary education for the region; and
  • being the major trauma centre for the south east.
  • Each of these raises the bar and radiates benefit and expectation more widely.

Our Vision and Strategic Goals

Our vision is to be locally and nationally renowned for delivering safe, high quality and compassionate care and to be the regional centre of clinical and academic excellence.

Best and Safest Care

  • We will demonstrate the best and safest care in our local DGH, more specialised and tertiary services, evidenced by regulatory compliance, health outcomes, patient satisfaction and clinical opinion.
  • We will deliver a step change in the level of safety our patients can expect by building on innovations such as the appointment of the first Chief of Safety in a UK hospital.
  • We will work with our clinical teams to make best and safest care the hallmark of excellence in our hospital.

Academic Excellence

  • We will work with higher education providers in Kent, Surrey and Sussex to deliver excellent teaching and training of current and future healthcare professionals in primary and secondary care.
  • We will treat the most complex cases in the region.
  • With our partner Medical School, we will contribute nationally to medical research in clearly defined areas; currently these are oncology, neurosciences, infectious diseases, ageing and paediatrics.

High Performing

  • We will deliver both national and local standards, and establish stretch targets fore best and safest care that match the aspirations of our public and staff.
  • We will be financially responsible.
  • We will invest in succession planning and attract the best and most able people, where appropriate, of international standing.
  • We will continue to support and develop doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals at the natural leaders at every level across the hospital.
  • We will consistently seek productivity and efficiency gains to enable continuing investment.

Specialties and achievements

Doctors and Nurses lead our hospitals: 13 of the 20 members of our Management Board are Clinicians. According to Dr Foster, our mortality rates and our patient safety record are in the best 5% of NHS hospitals in England; we passed two Care Quality Commission hygiene spot-checks in 2009, placing us in the countrys top 20% of hospitals; and in the last two years we have reduced the number of MRSA infections on our wards by 70%.
