Profile

The Severn Deanery is part of NHS South West the Strategic Health
Authorities and working in tandem with colleagues in the Peninsula
Deanery oversees junior doctor training in the largest geographical area
in the SHA structure – stretching from Land’s End to Tewkesbury.
The Severn Deanery is responsible for the planning, commissioning
and management of postgraduate medical and dental education and
training in Somerset, Avon, Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire.
The deanery patch serves a population of approximately 4 million. It
has a healthcare workforce in excess of 70,000, with a breadth of learning
and working environments, including some of the largest teaching
hospitals nationally and some of the smallest rural primary care trusts.
There are over 2,000 trainees at any one time. The span is from
Taunton in the South to Cheltenham in the North, Bristol in the West
and Swindon in the East. The deanery covers a spread of approximately,
85 miles North to South and 40 miles East to West.
With Bristol located relatively centrally in the footprint and with the
largest concentration of trainees (University Hospitals Bristol NHS
Foundation Trust and North Bristol NHS Trust are the two major
Teaching Hospitals) many trainees chose to locate themselves in Bristol
or the immediate Bristol area. All the other Trusts (with the possible
exception of Yeovil) are easily commutable on a daily basis with the
excellent motorway network both North and South (M5) and East and
West (M4).

Confidential Career advice
Careers support

Whether this is to discuss issues around specialty choice, preparing for
interviews, or a complete career change, the process of careers
guidance aims to enable you to reach well informed and realistic
decisions about your career. It is an opportunity to focus on your needs
and concerns and to discuss these with an impartial, qualified and
experienced careers guidance practitioner. Careers guidance is not
about telling you what to do with your life or providing you with an
instant solution - it may be a process that requires more than one
session and you should be prepared to carry out some research
between careers guidance sessions.

Career management workshops and Windmills

These workshops are usually arranged in conjunction with Foundation
Programme Directors and are delivered at your place of work.
We have recently purchased the licence to deliver the Windmills for
Doctors careers management package. This will be offered across the
deanery footprint from 2009.
If there are specific career-related topics which trainees would like
covered in a workshop, they can be customised according to individual
need.
Careers advice is also available via e-mail.
