Profile

The South West Peninsula Deanery was established on 1 April 2005 and is responsible for the commissioning and quality assurance of postgraduate medical and dental education and training across Devon and Cornwall.

It provides support for GP Training, Foundation Training, Core Training and Specialty Training for all trainees within the Peninsula.

The Deanery is part of the South West Strategic Health Authority (NHS South West) and is under the direction of the Postgraduate Dean, Professor Martin Beaman. The vision of the Deanery is to promote the delivery of high quality patient care through the provision of a highly skilled medical workforce.

The aim is for this workforce to be skilled in all aspects of patient care and be equipped to develop and modify their knowledge and skills in line with the changing needs of the service in the future. This means that all doctors completing training in the South West Peninsula should be fit to practise, fit for purpose and able to adapt.

MMC Recruitment timetables for 2009

The main round for recruitment to Specialty Training for August 2009 commences the 5th January 2009 and finishes on the 22nd May 2009.

MMC Recruitment responsibilities

The South West Peninsula Deanery is locally managing recruitment
for the following specialties / levels:

• Acute Care Common Stem – Acute Medicine / Anaesthesia /
Emergency Medicine
• Anaesthesia
• Clinical Radiology
• Core Psychiatry Training (CT2 only)
• Ophthalmology
• Surgery in General

Some specialties are recruiting by means of a national process
lead by a deanery or college on behalf of all deaneries. These
include the following:

• Core Medical Training (CT1 only)
• Core Psychiatry Training (CT1 only)
• Neurosurgery
• Obstetrics & Gynaecology
• Otolaryngology (ST3 only)
• Paediatrics and Child Health

Recruitment procedures

All vacancies available in the South West Peninsula Deanery will be advertised at the same time (5th January 2009) in the BMJ and on the Deanery website.

For vacancies recruited at a local level the South West Peninsula Deanery will be using a system called I:CAMS (Intrepid Candidate Application Matching System). This is an on-line application portal designed for applicants to submit applications to Specialty Training Programmes. A link to I:CAMS will be made available from the Deanery website in due cours.
