Profile
The Research Capacity Development Programme is one of the family of
programmes of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). The
RCD Programme makes research training awards to individuals who
show the potential to become research leaders in their particular field
and whose research is people or patient-focussed and relevant to the
NHS.
The Academic Clinical Fellowship, In-Practice Fellowship and Clinical
Lectureship awards support doctors and dentists in pursuing an academic
clinical career. The awards make up part of a package of measures
of the Integrated Academic Pathway recommended in the Walport
Report "Medically and dentally qualified academic staff:
Recommendations for training the researchers and educators of the
future".
MMC Recruitment timetables for 2009
For NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowships (ACFs), Round 1 recruitment began 14 November 2008 with a deadline 5 December for applications. Applicants can apply for as many ACFs as they want. All offers will be made January 2009. Round 2 opens early February 2009 and recruitment runs as per Deanery timetables for 2009.
For NIHR Clinical Lectureships (CLs) recruitment opens in February 2009 and runs until March 2010.
MMC Recruitment responsibilities
Academic Clinical Fellowship and Clinical Lectureship appointments are made through selected Academic Programmes which have been awarded to University/NHS Trust/Deanery partnerships. Academic Programmes cover a range of specialties including dentistry and a range of levels but are by no means comprehensive. Recruitment is run by Postgraduate Deaneries in England, using National Guidance and a National Application form. Prospective applicants should contact the relevant deanery in the first instance for further information.
See the NIHR CCRCD website www.nccrcd.nhs.uk/intetacatrain/2009iatacfandclposts for details of other NIHR Fellowship programmes
Recruitment procedures
A national advert appears in Research Journals including the BMJ, NIHR and NIHR CCRCD websites with links to the MMC website. Applicants are then directed to the Deanery websites for further information. For ACFs recruitment is led by the Deaneries with national guidance from NIHR CCRCD. For CLs recruitment is largely led by the Universities in collaboration with the Deaneries with national guidance from NIHR CCRCD.
