Trusts in our domain

The Northern Deanery has training opportunities across the North East
and Cumbria. Although the Deanery covers an area from the Scottish
border down to North Yorkshire and across to the Cumbria in the west,
the majority of programmes are based around the conurbations of
Newcastle, Middleborough and Sunderland, with excellent distcrict general
hospital experience in more rural settings. We work with 11 acute
trusts (which includes 2 specialist trusts providing mental health and
learning disabilities services), 13 primary care trusts, 196 general practice
training practices and 60 general dental training practices. The following
trusts are in the Northern Deanery area:

Profile

As a specialty trainee in the Northern Deanery you can be certain of the
highest quality training, supervision and support. Our commitment is
that our training is of the highest quality, ensuring the local community
receives the best possible care.

People who train in the Northern Deanery get much more than just high
quality training. In addition to our first class exam preparation, excellent
clinical and academic supervision and the breadth of experience
offered, we provide high calibre personal support to all our trainees.
We actively support trainees with differing needs with a range of deanery
support including, trainers with educational qualifications, expert
occupational physicians with an interest in doctors’ health, and ‘house
concern’, a bespoke service set up to support doctors in difficulty
throughout their careers. It is support like this that sets us apart from
other areas, so you can be reassured that whatever you come up
against you can rely on us for help.

Part of this help and support includes an extensive mentoring support
network and an expert career advice service. We also have an excellent
track record in responding to needs of trainees for flexible training, time
out of programme and to develop sub-speciality training skills.
A good work/life balance is essential for everyone’s well-being and
development and our training is set up to help you achieve this. You’ll
also be happy to know that, of all the deaneries, we pay one of the
highest levels of study leave and have many academic opportunities
including research and education.
