Profile
The North Western Deanery is highly regarded for the quality of training
and its friendly atmosphere. The report from the PMETB visit was
extremely complementary and noted our many achievements.

Trainees coming to the Deanery have an opportunity to work
across a broad range of hospitals gaining a wealth of experience of routine
conditions and more rare presentations. All programmes offer dedicated
time for learning (many of our specialty programmes have a formal
programme which leads to a masters qualification) and study leave is
managed through the training programmes, ensuring maximum opportunity
for all trainees. In addition to high quality training all trainees have an
opportunity to attend leadership and teaching skills development as well
as accessing a range of research opportunities. The Deanery has a reputation
for innovation and established the first ever integrated clinical
leadership programme, working to the ‘Medical Leadership Competency
Framework’; accredited to MSc level and delivered alongside the NHS
Graduate Management Training Schemes to promote joint working
between the medical and management workforce. We also have a high
academic profile with excellent links to the Universities of Manchester
and Lancaster and many successful Academic Clinical Fellow and
Clinical Lecturer appointments were made in 2008.
In August 2008 all our training posts were compliant with the 2009 standard
for the European Working Time Directive (EWTD), one year ahead
of the target date; we will therefore have twelve months to iron out any
teething problems and ensure that all hospitals have appropriate systems
in place to support trainees out of hours and ensure that there is
a balance of service and training. A team of junior doctors was
employed by NHS North West to lead the project and they are an example
of the way in which junior doctors are encouraged and empowered
in our Deanery to develop managerial and leadership skills at an early
stage in their careers, preparing them to become future NHS leaders.
The team worked closely with junior doctors, consultants, trusts and
the Deanery to ensure preservation of training and education whilst balancing
the pressures of service delivery and safe patient care.
All our trainees (including those in general practice) have a single
employer throughout their training programme, ensuring continuity of
employment for issues such as maternity leave and sick leave. Our
three lead employers work with one junior doctor local negotiating
committee to ensure the best possible terms and conditions of employment.
