Profile
The NHS in the West Midlands employs over 126,000 staff and is the largest employer in the region. This includes 19 acute hospital trusts, including 7 Foundation Trusts, 7 mental health trusts including 2 Foundation Trusts,16 primary care trusts (PCTs), 1 Care Trust (jointly providing health and social services) and an ambulance trust.
The West Midlands has a population of 5.3 million, with a rich mix of cultures and an ethnically diverse population. The range of population spans the high number of young people in the city of Birmingham to the older population in the more rural parts of the region such as Herefordshire.
The geographical variation across the region leads to a range of different service models including large teaching hospitals, district general hospitals, community services and an extensive primary care network. The large population served allows a comprehensive range of specialist services to be concentrated within the region resulting in a wide range of training opportunities across all specialties.
