St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust is among the largest healthcare providers in London, and one of the country’s principal teaching hospitals. It is a regional specialist centre covering a population of some 3.5 million in South West London, Surrey and beyond. Many Trust services are members of established clinical networks which bring together clinicians from a range of healthcare providers working to improve the quality of services for patients. These include the South London Cardiac and Stroke Network, and the South West London and Surrey Trauma Network for which St George’s is the designated heart attack centre, hyper-acute stroke unit and major trauma centre.
Operating from a single site, St George’s is also co-located with St George’s University of London (SGUL), the only institution in London that provides medical and health education and research in all disciplines, giving its students and researchers unrivalled access to multidisciplinary clinical experience. This co-location of Trust and University enables fluidity of students, research and clinical leaders between the two organisations.
This new role creates an exciting and unique opportunity to link even further the clinical, educational and research capabilities of the two organisations under one leader. As the first jointly appointed Medical Director for the Trust and for SGUL, and the third such joint appointment at a senior level, this new Director will provide key combined leadership in the development and implementation of the Trust’s and University’s strategies and services through membership of the Trust Board and University Council and the executive management teams of both organisations. The Medical Director will be responsible for developing both clinical and academic strategies, taking a lead in ensuring that the medical workforce, from undergraduate to the most senior levels, is nurtured and developed for the benefit of both organisations and for those it serves.
The new Medical Director will demonstrate strong and credible leadership in developing synergies across systems, and to inspire and motivate in the delivery of common aims and targets. The successful candidate will have significant influencing and negotiating skills, with the ability to engage, build and sustain relationships within the Trust, the University and with external organisations. A qualified medical practitioner in any discipline, this individual will be dedicated to ensuring that quality and service to patients are always key priorities.
