Consultant Anaesthetist

St Helena, South Atlantic

2 Years’ FTC commencing March 2015.

£75k-£90k pa taxable in St Helena plus other non-taxable allowances.

A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,000, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK, poised for transformation with the imminent construction of an airport. The 42-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

This role will incorporate general medical duties alongside the provision of anaesthetics to adult and paediatric patients, which would include general anaesthesia (LMA or intubation), neuraxial blocks and axillary plexus blocks. Neonatal cases may also arise.

Normally required one theatre day a week, you must be on-call 24/7 for anaesthetics and intensive care patients. You will also be a member of the general on-call rota for emergency out-of-hours care, supported by other medical professionals (General Surgeon, Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist) on the island as required.

Reviewing, updating and developing relevant protocols and guidelines based on UK NICE or international best practice, you will give advice and assistance to colleagues on pain management and other particular areas of expertise, such as being responsible for resuscitation training. You will also participate in the general practice clinics and share out-patient and inpatient duties. Providing and strengthening Primary Care Services on the island, you will be part of the healthcare governance committee.

FRCA or DESA or equivalent, you must have experience in general medicine with ATLS, APLS or equivalent. Good English will be essential.
