Invitation to apply for the position of Chair of the Thames Valley Clinical Senate- 2 PA session pw

The Thames Valley Clinical Senate is a non-statutory body which has been formed to support Clinical Commissioning Groups, Health and Wellbeing Boards and NHS England to make the best decisions about healthcare for their populations. 

The Senate’s function is to provide clinical advice on matters of strategic importance to the Thames Valley, to develop a shared understanding of issues and to build consensus on proposals for service change and improvement. From September 2014 it will also support NHS England in assuring the clinical components of major reconfiguration proposals.

The Clinical Senate is hosted by NHS England Thames Valley. It operates as an independent body and the independence of the Senate, and its membership, is a core principle of the Senate’s way of working. Its focus is to provide impartial advice which is in the best interests of patients, not of organisations or professional interests. Objectivity and neutrality will be essential to the Senate’s credibility.

The Clinical Senate is comprised of the Assembly and the Council.
• The Clinical Senate Assembly: a diverse multi-professional group providing the Council with ready access to experts from a broad range of health and care professions encompassing the whole patient pathway.

• The Clinical Senate Council: a smaller multi-professional group which provides overall leadership and manages the Senate’s business, maintaining a strategic overview across the Thames Valley and formulating the provision of advice that is sought from the Senate.
As the Thames Valley Senate Chair, the post-holder will lead the strategic and operational development and delivery of coherent and effective senate arrangements across the Thames Valley, to support commissioners in achieving improved outcomes for patients and benefits to population health. The post-holder will have overall responsibility for clinical leadership, engagement and influence in the Thames Valley Senate activities.

A key aspect of this role will be to provide overarching professional and clinical leadership of the Senate in the Thames Valley and to maintain credibility with all key players within the senate community, the Senate Chair will be responsible for fostering a culture of collaboration for the delivery of equitable, high quality care. At times this will include acting as ‘honest broker’ reconciling conflicting views and interests.

Applications for this high profile position are invited from senior clinicians with significant experience in strategic clinical leadership with the credibility and ability to command the respect of his/her colleagues.

Interviews will be held on the 27th June 2014 and will consist of a presentation to an invited audience followed by a formal interview.
