NHS Highland is the largest geographical Board area in Scotland, serving a population of 300,000 spread over 12,000 square miles. We have over 10,500 directly employed staff and around 1,000 primary care staff and have a budget of £706 million.

We are committed to shifting the balance of care by providing care to our patients as close to home as possible. To support this vision, we are now seeking to recruit a Medical Director.

You will report to the Board Chief Executive, and will contribute to the development and management of the overall Corporate Agenda and take the lead on a range of Board priorities. You will provide the Board with expert advice on Medical and Dental professional issues and will be accountable for the standard and quality of these services. Additionally you will provide strategic and professional leadership to Medical and Dental staff across NHS Highland, working closely with the Chief Operating Officer, Board Nurse Director, Director of Public Health, the Operational Units and the Argyll & Bute Community Health Partnership.

You will provide leadership in the continued implementation of the Highland Quality Approach (HQA) in support of NHS Highland Board Vision, Strategic Aims and Quality Objectives. This will require lead responsibility for the further development of an Improvement and Co-production Plan which encompasses collaborative working between Public Health, Primary and Secondary Care and Adult Social Care. You will also take the lead role for Clinical Governance and Medical Workforce Planning and Development.

We are seeking an experienced professional leader with well-developed influencing and communication skills, combined with a facilitative and supportive style of working. You will require a high level of strategic and technical ability and must have recent experience of leadership and management of medical staff. You will have current registration with the General Medical Council with a license to practise.
