Palliative Medicine Specialist

Timaru, New Zealand 

The South Canterbury Palliative Care Service requires a Medical Lead to work with their community based service and provide specialist consult, advice and education to key stakeholders.

Palliative Care Services within the South Canterbury District are delivered within Timaru Public Hospital, across a range of Community Services, and the South Canterbury Hospice. This is an exciting prospect to join a visionary team, to provide clinical leadership while continuing to develop an integrated Palliative Care Service for the South Canterbury region.

This role will suit a Palliative Medicine Specialist who has (or is eligible to obtain) Vocational Scope of Practice with the Medical Council of NZ. You will demonstrate an ability to work well as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team, including Primary and Secondary Services.

Although this role is half-time (5/10ths), there is potential for full-time employment depending upon other areas of practice. Excellent relationship management skills and experience in clinical leadership will be essential qualities, with an emphasis on clinical quality processes.

Your key responsibilities will include:

-Leadership within the Palliative Care team

-Working with South Canterbury’s medical, nursing, pharmacy and family support teams to provide Specialist Palliative Care for patients and their families / whanau in hospital, community and Hospice settings

-Foster and maintain Primary Care relationships

-Working within a partnership model to support and enable colleagues in primary and secondary care in the clinical management of patients with complex Palliative Care needs

-Providing education

-Strategic and operational planning

-Project management

-Contribute to innovation and organisational change
