Health Service Executive


The West/North West Hospitals Group comprises of the following hospitals:

  • Galway University Hospitals
  • Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway
  • Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, Co. Mayo
  • Sligo Regional Hospital, Sligo, Co. Sligo
  • Letterkenny Regional Hospital, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal
  • Roscommon Hospital, Co. Roscommon

The group provide a comprehensive range of Medical, Surgical, Paediatric and Obstetric and Gynaecologic services to emergency and elective patients on an inpatient, outpatient and day care basis across the West and North West Region of Ireland. All Hospitals in the group play a leadership role in the acute service delivery serving a catchment area of one million people. All Hospitals in the West/North West Group are affiliated to the National University of Ireland at Galway and are involved in the training of medical and other healthcare professionals.

The region has excellent schools and access to Universities and Third Level Education whilst the cost of living in the West and North West of Ireland is lower than that of other areas.

The West of Ireland is renowned for its atmospheric towns and villages, long stretches of stunning coastline and soaring sea cliffs, boasting a unique area of natural beauty and a vibrant cultural heritage. The area is only 2-3 hours from Ireland’s capital city Dublin, whilst Ireland West International Airport (Knock Airport), Shannon Airport and city of Derry Airport provide excellent airport connections to international destinations. There is also good train, bus and road transport infrastructure to all areas.


These positions are for 1, 2 or 3 years duration with opportunities for rotation.

SHO positions are available in all specialties in all 3 directorates for duration of 6 or 12 months. Rotations between sites will be possible for 12 month posts. These will incorporate the opportunity to work in different specialties.
