NHS National Services Scotland

Consultant in Health Protection

Gastro-intestinal, Emerging and Zoonotic Infections

NHS Consultant Contract or Agenda for Change Band 8d

Permanent, Full-time 10 Programmed Activities or 37.5 hours per week

Based at Meridian Court, Glasgow

Applicants for part-time, job share or flexible working will be considered

An opportunity has arisen within Health Protection Scotland (HPS) for a motivated, innovative and skilled individual to lead in the area of Gastrointestinal, Emerging and Zoonotic Infections.

Health Protection Scotland (HPS) is part of the newly created Public Health and Intelligence (PHI) Strategic Business Unit (SBU) of NHS National Services Scotland (NSS). The mission for the new unit is:

“To transform information into evidence for action to protect and improve health and well-being in Scotland”.

The Gastrointestinal and Zoonotic Infections (GIZ) team is part of a wider clinical group in HPS which includes the Travel and International Health and Environmental Public Health teams. These three teams work co-operatively to address public health concerns of a global nature, ensuring the public health system responds rapidly to new and unexpected threats to health of all kinds.

As clinical and strategic lead for the GIZ team you will be expected to lead on developing programmes for tackling foodborne disease, emerging and re-emerging infection and human aspects of zoonotic disease. This will involve bringing together the full range of PHI capabilities for detection, surveillance, tracking and response. There is an increasing ask in this area as a result of globalisation, population and food movement across borders, the link between animal and human health and emerging disease, and the impact of climate change. This position provides an opportunity to shape and implement national strategy in this evolving area of public health.

Do you have the skills and experience required to provide vision and leadership in this area? If so, we would welcome your application for this position.

Applicants must be on the GMC/GDC Specialist Register/List or UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists.
