Profile
The North Western Deanery has a reputation for providing high quality training and is renowned for its friendly atmosphere. Trainees coming to the Deanery have the opportunity to work in a broad range of hospitals allowing them to gain a wealth of experience in routine conditions as well as more rare presentations. The Deanery provides excellent opportunities for trainees to develop as medical educators and leaders, and has good links with many local universities. In GP Specialty Training we delivered the first formal extended training pilot, the first lead employer arrangement for GPSTs and pride ourselves on being at the forefront of training. The majority of our ‘graduates’ stay in the North West as independent practitioners. We are the Lead Deanery for the new pilot 2 year Broad Based Training programme, comprising 6 months in CMT, GP, Paediatrics and Psychiatry and is ideally structured for those trainees wishing to gain experience in both primary and secondary care settings. The Deanery runs a Postgraduate Certificate in Workplace Based Postgraduate Medical Education in conjunction with Edge Hill University and all hospital-based higher specialty trainees are funded to undertake module 1, which gives accreditation as a clinical supervisor. There is also the opportunity for trainees to undertake an accredited module in Medical Leadership in Practice delivered by Manchester Business School. In addition, the Deanery offers specialised opportunities including: the innovative Medical Leadership Programme, where trainees learn alongside NHS Graduate Management trainees to promote joint working between medical and management workforces; Medical Education Fellowships where trainees undertake an educational project; Academic Clinical Fellowships and Clinical Lectureship programmes. We also have an active Careers Section which can be accessed via our website.
