Chair of Neurosurgery, Head of Division of Neurosurgery
& Honorary Consultant Neurosurgeon,
UCLH NHS FT, Queen Square

Applications are invited for the UCL Chair of Neurosurgery and Head of the Division of Neurosurgery, tenable at the UCL Institute of Neurology, Queen Square. The Chair is a joint appointment supported by UCL and by the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (UCLH NHS Foundation Trust). It is also supported by an endowment from the Brain Research Trust.

This is a major international neurosurgical leadership role and the successful candidate will be expected to play a key role in determining academic strategy for Neurosurgery across UCL and beyond. The appointee will be responsible for defining and leading the UCL research strategy in Neurosurgery and ensuring that it remains internationally competitive. S/he will be expected to maintain and develop a world class research programme relevant to basic, translational, and clinical aspects of neurosurgery and play a major role in developing multi-disciplinary research across UCL, London and beyond. It is expected that the appointee will co-ordinate and lead academic surgical research across the very large neurosurgical clinical service at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. The post will involve a clinical commitment in neurosurgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, part of UCLH NHS Foundation Trust, for which an Honorary Consultant contract will be awarded. The post holder will also contribute to IoN’s educational activities and to local, national and international courses and symposia.

Applicants must hold a medical qualification fully registrable in the UK, a higher academic degree, FRCS or equivalent, and be entered on the appropriate GMC Specialist Register. S/he must have wide experience in Clinical Neurosurgery and have an area of clinical specialisation, experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and the ability to demonstrate significant achievements in original research. A demonstrable capacity and clear track record in academic leadership and an international reputation in the field of neurosurgical research are essential.

The appointment is available immediately. Salary in accordance with the Clinical Academic Consultant contract and associated payscale (currently £74,504 - £100,446 pa), plus London Weighting of £2,162 pa, superannuable. Calculation of basic salary and pay thresholds will be based on seniority as indicated in applications.
