Director of the Welsh Cancer Intelligence and
Surveillance Unit and Consultant in Public Health

Permanent, full time

Consultant Payscale or Band 9

Based in central Cardiff

This is a high-profile and challenging role with responsibilities for the Welsh Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit (WCISU) and within the wider Public Health Wales Observatory. Through your leadership and expertise, you’ll protect and improve the Welsh population’s health and well-being, with a particular focus on cancer intelligence.

As Director of WCISU, you’ll lead strategy and operations for this specialist registry, which holds records of all incidences of cancer in Wales going back to 1972. Expect to participate in national and international cancer research projects, providing expert epidemiological and public health input and contributing to data design and analysis. Working as a member of the Public Health Wales Observatory at this exciting time, you will support and drive the public health agenda through the provision of high-quality intelligence to inform public health action.

A Consultant in either Public Health or Public Health Medicine, you must be on the GMC/GDC Specialist Register/UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists. Experience of working with a major population-level database or surveillance system is essential, as is experience of undertaking practical information analysis. A strategic thinker with proven leadership skills, you’ll be capable of managing both projects and people. Good communication, including the ability to present ideas, influence opinion and negotiate effectively, is also essential.
