GUY’S AND ST THOMAS’ NHS FOUNDATION TRUST
Trust Wide
LOCUM CONSULTANT
INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY/VIROLOGY
From £74,504 per annum exclusive of London Zone
Full time
Reference: LCON075
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is made up of two of London’s best known Teaching Hospitals, and employs over 12,500 staff and over 1 million patient contacts a year.
Applications are invited for the above Locum post in the Virology Section of the Department of Infectious Diseases, available from 1st April 2013, for a period of five months in the first instance. This is an excellent opportunity to join a first class team in an active and progressive central London Teaching Hospital, aiming to deliver comprehensive, high-quality Diagnostic and Clinical Virology/Infectious Diseases (ID) Services.
The postholder will join two existing Virologists and work closely alongside seven other Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Consultant colleagues in a single Directorate of Infection, in addition to two Consultants in Paediatric Infectious Diseases. A distinctive feature of the way we work is complete integration of the Laboratory Diagnostic and Clinical Services. All Consultants are expected to have well-developed Clinical skills and provide Clinical telephone advice and interpretation of laboratory results, ad hoc inpatient consults, weekly ward rounds, and actively participate in the delivery of Infection Control. The postholder will be the Virology Lead for Infection Control, and will also work particularly closely with HIV, GUM and Occupational Health Services within the Trust, contributing to Multidisciplinary Meetings and ensuring provision of an efficient, high-quality and responsive Diagnostic Service.
GSTT is one of the largest Infection Training Centres (ten Specialty Registrars (StRs)) in the UK, and prominent in one of the most highly regarded ID/MMV dual training rotations. The postholder will therefore be expected to provide trainee clinical supervision on a daily basis, and to participate in ongoing Teaching and Training Programmes.
You must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), hold licence to practise, and be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of attaining your Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent at the interview stage.
The postholder will have regular contact with Vulnerable Adults and/or Children (0-18 years), and therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and as such, it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Criminal Records Bureau to check for any previous criminal convictions.
You may be required to work a shift pattern designed to provide cover for 24 hours a day, or an extended working day over a seven day week. Your hours of work will be as detailed in your job plan and may be varied from time to time in accordance with the Consultant Contract Terms and Conditions.
As an organisation we are committed to developing our Services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This means that some Staff Groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer Services in the evenings or at weekends.
For a copy of the job description and/or an informal discussion about this post, please contact Dr Emma Aarons, Consultant Virologist, telephone: 020 7188 3138, or Dr Nicholas Price, Director of Infection, telephone: 020 7188 3148.
