POOLE HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

Consultant Cardiologist

Poole Hospital and Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trusts invite applications for a Consultant Cardiologist.

This would suit General Cardiologists with pacing and diagnostic angiography skills. Within this post, however, there would also be the opportunity to pursue a sub-specialty interest such as imaging or heart failure.

An interest in research is actively encouraged, and both departments have strong links with Bournemouth University and a tradition of involvement in local and national research projects.

Poole and Bournemouth Hospitals have a reputation for being centres of excellence for cardiology in the South West. The two departments cover all aspects of cardiology services with the exception of cardiac surgery. This includes coronary intervention, electrophysiology and a full array of cardiac imaging modalities including stress echo, cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, nuclear imaging and transoesophageal echo. There are also regular paediatric cardiology and GUCH cardiology clinics held at Poole. Both cardiac departments have British Society of Echo accreditation in all forms of echo. The imaging departments have been designated a reference site for cardiac CT by both General Electric and Philips and have 3 state-of-the–art CT scanners. Poole Hospital also has a 3T MRI scanner for both structural and stress cardiac MRI.

Between the two sites we have 1100 beds and serve a population of 700,000. There are cardiac coronary care units, cardiac wards, cardiac catheter and intervention suites along with 1 EP lab. There are separate permanent pacemaker and transoesophageal echocardiography suites. There are 2 rapid access chest pain units, multi-disciplinary Cardiac Rehabilitation programmes and Specialist nurse-led Heart Failure service. There are 15 consultant cardiologists across the 2 departments, 7 specialist registrars, 2 PhD fellows & 5 clinical fellows.

Poole Hospital and Royal Bournemouth Hospitals already have strong links, and the hospitals have submitted an application to merge. The merger process is anticipated to be completed in mid to late 2013. If this application is successful it is proposed that an integrated cardiology department will be developed across the 2 sites. This is likely to require an increase in cross-site working for all members of the multi-disciplinary team.

This will present excellent opportunities for the successful candidate who will work flexibly across the two sites which are 8 miles apart.

Poole and Bournemouth are renowned as being premier resorts for coastal living in the South of England. Poole boasts the world’s second largest natural harbour and is in close proximity to the World Heritage ‘Jurassic’ Coastline. Excellent local schools are located within the region and Poole is one of the top two safest places to live in the country. The combination of first-rate hospitals, premier location and excellent lifestyle opportunities make this a highly attractive post.

Applicants must possess a recognised medical degree, MRCP or equivalent and should possess a CCT in Cardiology or be within 6 months of obtaining this on the day of the interview.
