St Helena, South Atlantic
Two year FTC commencing April 2013 with the option to extend – a later start date can be considered.
£80 - £110,000 pa taxable in St Helena depending on qualifications and experience plus other non-taxable allowances
A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,000 and excellent recreational activities (ie swimming, diving, sailing, walking, fishing). St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK, poised for transformation with the imminent construction of an airport. The 30-bed General Hospital is located in the capital, Jamestown. Primary health care is provided at the outpatient clinic adjacent to the hospital with outreach services in three district clinics and in the community.
You will be the most senior health professional on the island, providing leadership to Public Health and clinical staff on St Helena working in close collaboration with the Director of the Directorate of Health and Social Welfare (DHSW).
Key responsibilities:
Lead the development and continuous improvement of standards and quality in preventive and clinical services on the island with cost-effective links for advice and support off island;
Line manage medical doctors and senior health staff on island, and visiting specialists;
Working in a team with other medical officers, provide general medical care to island residents and visitors;
Use available demographics and health statistics as well as new/ emerging medical knowledge for evidence-based planning of services;
Lead the implementation, routine monitoring and annual review of medical sections of the DHSW Strategic plan 2013-2016 aimed towards sustainable long-term improvements in health services and health outcomes. The post holder is expected to actively guide DHSW staff, engage in training of health staff and students and in weekly CPD sessions with the medical team.
Holding a full registration with the GMC or similar medical board, in Cardiology, Anaesthetics or Public Health you should have substantial experience in Health Services Management and management of clinical colleagues. Your participative management style should be supported by strong interpersonal and communication skills and experience of managing, motivating and leading a team through change processes to achieve organisational goals. You must be IT literate with excellent knowledge of EMIS, or willing to be trained. You should also have a background in evidence-based decision making and strategic planning.
