The University of Liverpool has one of the largest biomedical communities in the UK and is the only university with education and research spanning the biosciences, medicine, dentistry, health sciences, tropical medicine and veterinary science.
For over 100 years Liverpool has been at the forefront of fundamental advances in biomedical knowledge and practice, with outstanding highlights such as the first diagnostic X-ray, the discovery of the transmission of malaria by mosquitoes and the introduction of neuromuscular blockers into surgical anaesthesia.
Increasingly, our focus is on translational research, providing real opportunities for innovation and working with a range of partners to improve the public's health and wellbeing.
Drug safety & personalised medicines
Drug safety research and personalised medicines are internationally recognised key strengths in Liverpool. With a focus on clinically-relevant adverse drug reactions, we collaborate with businesses to understand the mechanisms that cause these adverse reactions with the ultimate aim of improving patient safety.
Combatting infectious diseases
Infectious disease research represents a major competitive strength in Liverpool; our links with key partners provide a thriving, interdisciplinary network through which basic research can be translated to generation of new products to improve patient health.
Oncology
The University is strong in a number of tumour specific areas and has the largest combined clinical and basic pancreatic cancer research group in the UK. Translational research activity is undertaken with a strong focus on clinical practice and clinical trials, and extensive collaborations with biotech and pharmaceutical industrial partners.
Clinical trials and evidence synthesis
Our clinical trials resources and specialised related activities enable organisations to evaluate whether a new intervention is safe and effective. We also undertake systematic reviews of research to identify areas where new trials are required. These can form the basis for decision-making by governmental bodies.
Paediatric medicine
Liverpool is at the forefront of translational research and development in children’s health and paediatric medicine, placing us in a unique position to support the pharmaceutical industry in development of interventions for children.
Gastrointestinal health
Gastrointestinal research in Liverpool is interdisciplinary in nature with activities ranging from basic science to translational projects and clinical trials. Together with industry partners we address unmet clinical needs in gastrointestinal disease prevention and management.

Activities in this area centre around the Liverpool Obesity Research Network, which offers industrial collaborators an unrivalled knowledge and range of expertise in investigational methods of weight management.
Ophthalmology
Liverpool is at the forefront of development of novel techniques to improve the understanding and treatment of ocular disease. The expertise and resources and the applied nature of its activities have resulted in numerous collaborations with industry in technology and product development.
