GP – with substantive Public Health experience

St Helena, South Atlantic

2 year FTC commencing preferably April 2013 – a later date could be negotiated

£70 - £100,000 pa taxable in St Helena plus other non-taxable allowances

A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,000, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK, poised for transformation with the construction of an airport. Primary health care is provided at the outpatient clinic in the capital, Jamestown, with outreach services in 3 district clinics and in the community. Secondary care is provided in the island’s 30-bed hospital.


Key responsibilities:


Lead the development and continuous improvement of primary health care and public health on island with involvement and participation of the community;


Lead management and implementation of cost-effective environmental health programmes;


Working in a team with other medical officers, provide general medical care to island residents and visitors;


Use available demographics and health statistics for evidence-based planning of services. Provide advice on new and emerging fields of medical science or where there is a need for significant changes to medical practice or of the medical workforce.


Contribute to achievements of the St Helena Health Directorate Strategic plan which has a strong focus on health promotion and preventative care programmes as well as staff development. The postholder is expected to actively engage in training of nursing staff and students and in weekly CPD sessions with the medical team.


Your qualifications must include MB, ChB or BM, with BS, BAO and BCH, GMC registration or eligibility and good standing with that or any other equivalent professional body. You must have a substantial Primary Care (General Practice) Postgraduate history with substantial experience in leading Public Health initiatives.
