The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust was established in 1994 and is a major acute Trust providing a serving the people of Wolverhampton, the wider Black Country, South Staffordshire, North Worcestershire and Shropshire - a core catchment of 335,000 for secondary care and 1 million for tertiary care.
The Trust has an excellent reputation for its clinical services and for whole system transformation in the delivery of clinical care, service reform and partnership working. Delivering its services from a number of locations including outreach clinics it fulfils two main roles:
- The provision of top quality emergency, community and secondary care services for our local population
- Tertiary and specialist services both independently and through clinical networks to the wider population of West Midlands and beyond
In April 2011 the Trust completed a successful, full integration with the community services from Wolverhampton City PCT. The Trust is one of the largest acute providers in the West Midlands, having more than 800 beds on the New Cross site including medical, surgical and intensive care beds, neonatal intensive care cots and 82 rehabilitation beds at West Park Hospital. As the second largest employer in Wolverhampton the Trust employs more than 6,500 staff.
Specialties and achievements
The Trust gained Cancer Centre status in 1997, was designated as the 4th Regional Heart & Lung Centre during 2004/05 and became one of the first wave Bowel Screening Centres in 2006. The Trust is the largest teaching hospital in the Black Country.
The Trust is aiming to fulfil an ambitious service strategy to achieve Foundation status.
As a measure of the Trust's constant efforts to break new ground in the treatment of patients, top honours went to the Trust at this year's Nursing Times Awards for achievements in infection prevention. It was also shortlisted for its work on dementia and cardiology. In addition the Trust has been shortlisted for the HSJ awards for Patient Safety. The Trust's WUCTAS team, (Wolverhampton Urgent Care Triage and Access Service), were also shortlisted in the annual Health Business Awards and its innovation in IT was praised. The Trust introduced robotic surgery to the Midlands, developed the first product to feature in the NHS catalogue, and rolled out the handheld VitalPac mobile device to monitor, record and track patients' progress.

In line with the National agenda to reduce agency usage, the Trust is continuing to build its own Medical Locum Bank and are always looking for junior doctors of all grades and specialties to provide high quality temporary support to our substantive teams, delivering the best care to our patients. Whenever possible we prefer our patients to be cared for by a doctor known to us.

Local information
Wolverhampton is a modern industrial city situated on the western fringe of the Black Country. To the north is Cannock Chase and to the west the Shropshire borders with many attractions nearby. Wolverhampton is an urban, multi-ethnic city with a population of around 250,000. The area is well served by the motorway network, with the M5, M6 and M54 within easy reach. There are regular direct rail services to London Euston (journey time about 2 hours) and to Manchester (journey time about 1 hour). BirminghamInternationalAirport is 30 minutes away by road and ManchesterInternationalAirport can be reached within 1 hour 20 minutes.
Shopping in Wolverhampton offers a varied selection of facilities and amenities. Shopping is also available in nearby conurbations, including Birmingham with its famous Mailbox and Bullring centres.
The Civic and Wulfrun Halls are used for a variety of concerts and promotions. In addition, there is an ArtGallery and a good public library. The Grand Theatre in the city centre has been extensively refurbished. The city centre has an active nightlife, offering a variety of night clubs, bars, restaurants and a cinema. Sporting facilities include Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, several health and fitness clubs as well as clubs for all of the major sports. In addition there is an all-weather racetrack for horses and at least six golf clubs are within easy reach.
Education is well catered for with many excellent maintained schools, Independent schools, Wolverhampton College and the University of Wolverhampton.
