Public Health England will provide strategic leadership and vision for protecting and improving the nation’s health.
Its ambition is to lead nationally and enable locally a transformation in the health expectations of all people in
England regardless of where they live and the circumstance of their birth. It will achieve this through the application of research, knowledge and skills.
Public Health England will be an executive agency of the Department of Health, and will start on 1 April 2013. It will be a distinct delivery organisation with operational autonomy to advise and support Government, local authorities and the NHS in a professionally independent manner.
The organisation is seeking to appoint a Regional Director for the South of England and eight Centre Directors. The Regional Director post will be based in the South, co-located with the NHS Commissioning Board, and the Centre Director posts will be based across the following designated locations:
- Avon, Gloucester and Wiltshire
- Bedfordshire, Herts and Northamptonshire
- Cumbria and Lancashire
- Devon, Cornwall and Somerset
- Hants, Isle of Wight and Dorset
- Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire
- Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex
- Thames Valley
Each region will be led by a Director who has extensive knowledge and proven commitment to public health. Regional Directors will provide expert public health advice and services to regional partners so that improved outcomes in the three domains of public health are delivered in their regions. The Regional Directors will also support the centres in their work with local partners to deliver improved public health outcomes and bring local insight to national strategies and policies, and contribute to the development and implementation of national
strategies that deliver the Public Health Outcomes Framework.
They will also lead specifi c work programmes and be part of Public Health England’s National Executive.
Centre Directors will provide leadership and support to local government, NHS and other local partners to deliver improved public health. Working alongside the Regional Directors and other regional partners, they will also be required to lead on specifi c areas from a national perspective. Each Centre Director will ensure and be responsible for the provision of a high quality, highly responsive expert public health service with a specifi c focus on the transformational role of health and wellbeing boards and other important stakeholders.
The successful candidates will be required to use outstanding judgement and skill to bring a local perspective on important national strategies and policies, and to take the lead on improving local public health outcomes.
Candidates must be included on the GMC Specialist Register in Public Health, Microbiology or Infectious Diseases Medicine, GDC Specialist List or UK Public Health Register for Public Health Specialists. The successful candidates will be appointed to the point of the Consultant salary scale appropriate to their years of seniority or on a very senior manager (VSM) salary if from a non-medical background.
Prospective candidates are invited to contact Richard Gleave, Chief Operating Officer, at Richard.Gleave@southwest.nhs.uk who will then call you to discuss the posts.
Please note that candidates ‘at risk’ of redundancy within the NHS, Department of Health or ALBs will be given priority consideration for these roles.
