A position is available for a permanent, full time Psychiatrist with special interest in Psychiatry of Old Age. The successful applicant will be joining four other Psychiatrists in a thriving Multidisciplinary Team responsible for provision of services to a large, mixed, urban and rural catchment area. You will be providing a full range of services to approximately 50,000 people over 65 years of age in the upper North Island in a strong clinical governance partnership with management.


The Waikato District, population of 360,000, stretches from the surf beaches in the west to the white sand beaches of the stunning Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty in the east. The region enjoys a comfortable, temperate climate. Hamilton City, population of 140,000, is in the centre of greater Waikato region and is the fourth largest city in New Zealand. It has the full range of social and sporting amenities as well as excellent schooling.


The Service has an Inpatient Assessment Unit, full Multidisciplinary Community Team, Memory Service and is based at the large, tertiary Waikato Hospital in Hamilton. The Hospital Campus has seen a period of significant rebuilding and upgrading. The Inpatient Unit and Community Team will co-locate in July 2013 with Older Persons and Rehabilitation Services in a new, purpose built Older Persons and Rehabilitation hub. At that time the Inpatient Unit will increase to 15 beds. The Hospital is the seat of a successful Psychiatry Registrar Training Programme and involvement in both teaching and service improvement is encouraged. The Academic Department on campus is a branch of the University of Auckland, allowing research interests to be explored.


What you need to be considered for this position:

  • Should be New Zealand Vocationally registered or have an equivalent overseas qualification to meet the Medical Council of New Zealand criteria for Vocational registration in New Zealand.

  • Ideally, you will also hold a recognised certificate of Postgraduate Training in Psychiatry of Old Age.

  • You will be expected to participate in an after hours roster covering generic Psychiatry Services.
