We are seeking a Specialist General Surgeon to work in Thames, a rural centre to 45,000 people. This position is available from early 2013. You would make up the complement of three full time equivalents. Our Surgery is largely Abdominal with interest areas. 80% of our work is elective, drawing on a wider Surgical catchment from the Waikato area.
This is a life style public hospital post, less stressed or busy than city practice. Flexibility to accommodate family interests or pre-retirement is possible. We invite candidates to reside in Thames, a town of 7,500 people. Fishing, beaches, and bush abound, along with more than 100 interest groups. There are cultural opportunities at home or in nearby Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. Schools are adequate and children of hospital staff can achieve well.
Services cooperate with the Tertiary Centre at Waikato to provide cover on weekends. Call is 1:3 weekdays with informal cover on weekends requiring a brief ward round or telephone advice. Assessment is supported by a new Emergency Department with Emergency Fellows, Rural Hospital Trainees, and Senior Doctors in attendance; Senior Medial Officers support care in the 50 bed combined Medical and Surgical Unit. Radiography with CT and laboratory are on site, but specialty Imaging and Pathology are off-site. There is a team of Physicians and a Geriatrician to complete the Inpatient Service. Subspecialty or risky Anaesthetic cases are transferred to Waikato an hour and a half away.
While no private operating is available in Thames, it is possible to consult in Thames and operate in institutions one hour and a half away.
Candidates are expected to contribute to minor Surgical Day procedures largely Skin Cancers, and Upper and Lower GI Endoscopy, and Elective General Surgical Referrals from a wider catchment. Laparoscopic Colorectal development occurs with regional support. Breast interest has been possible through close liaison with the Regional Breast Care Centre. Visiting operative sessions in Thames are provided by Ear, Nose and Throat, Plastics, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, and Thyroid specialties. Thames Surgeons have provided visiting Consultancy and Endoscopy to other rural centres.
For this position you will be required to hold or eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent (FRACS).
