Director of the Victorian Spinal Cord Service

Applications are invited for this prestigious full time appointment as Director of The Victorian Spinal Cord Service (VSCS) at Austin Health, a major public teaching hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

The VSCS is a state-wide service that provides acute management, rehabilitation and community follow-up for people residing in Victoria, Tasmania and the South Western NSW, who sustain traumatic spinal cord injuries (SCI). The VSCS is one of only six such specialist services in Australia and forms part of Victoria’s state trauma system.

The VSCS is a clinical service that extends across the Austin Hospital and Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre (RTRC). The VSCS also works in partnership with community agencies in the provision of services to people with SCI. The service is well supported by an operational Manager and has two inpatient wards comprising a 20 bed acute spinal unit, a 20 bed rehabilitation unit and a range of specialised community outreach services. The VSCS admits approximately 80 patients with new injuries per year.

The VSCS is a recognised centre of excellence in clinical care and is a leader in spinal research. This will be strengthened by the establishment on site of the Spinal Research Institute, an independent externally funded enterprise. The primary focus of the Institute will be to support research into the consequences of SCI and to undertake translational research to benefi t SCI people.

Subject to the approval of the University of Melbourne, the appointee will be eligible for an honorary appointment as Associate Professorial Fellow with the title of Associate Professor within the University of Melbourne, at Austin Health.

We are looking for an exceptional leader who has a strong clinical background, research and teaching credentials and the ability to take operational responsibility for the provision of all clinical activities related to the VSCS. You will work collaboratively with the Manager of the VSCS to support, maintain and drive world’s best practice in spinal cord injury management.

You will have or be eligible for full medical registration in Victoria and hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Physicians or equivalent relevant postgraduate qualifi cation. You will have demonstrated and extensive experience in the care of spinal patients, teaching, research, quality assurance and proven collaborative, organisational and management skills.
