Welsh Blood Service
A positive career
Full-time (10 sessions)
Applications are invited for this exciting replacement post which offers the opportunity to become a key member of the Welsh Blood Service team, working in a centre of excellence with the task of providing expert advice and leadership in the practice of transfusion medicine in Wales.
As Medical Director, you will head up a Clinical Services team of 25 medical, nursing and administrative staff including two other Consultants based in the headquarters at Talbot Green. The remit of Clinical Services includes maintaining clinical standards in blood and component donation, leadership of a hospital-based Better Blood Transfusion team, provision of training for the blood collection and apheresis teams, and giving medical / clinical advice to blood service departments including blood component production & testing, immunohaematology and stem cell transplantation.
As a vital member of the Consultant team you will be expected to develop interests to complement those of the other Haematologists. An interest in Research and Development would be particularly welcome, as it is intended that the postholder will develop and lead the WBS’s R&D programme as part of the Velindre Trust’s overall R&D strategy. As Head of Department you will have responsibility for a budget of approximately £1.5m.
The Welsh Blood Service is undergoing a major modernisation programme to ensure the continued availability of a safe, efficient and effective blood supply. You will provide professional direction and leadership for all WBS clinical staff and will have a central role in driving forward a culture of change, innovation and service transformation, participating fully as a member of the WBS Senior Management Team, but also forging new relationships with clinical and research teams outside the WBS. The Welsh Government has announced its support for an all-Wales Blood Service, and you will be expected to provide clinical leadership during the important transition period and beyond. There will be opportunities for making an active contribution to the development of local, national and international policy in transfusion and transplantation.
The Welsh Blood Service is a division of the Velindre NHS Trust. It operates from a modern purpose-built centre at Talbot Green (near Pontyclun and Llantrisant), 10 miles northwest of Cardiff. The Clinical Services Department is based here, together with the component testing and production laboratories, the antenatal and reference serology laboratories and the Welsh Transplantation and Immunogenetics Laboratory (WTAIL). There may be opportunities to undertake direct clinical care sessions at local hospitals following negotiation with nearby Health Boards. There will be a commitment to participate in the out of hours medical cover (1 in 3 rota) for the WBS.
