Medical Non-Executive Director

The BMJ Group employs c. 400 staff and has revenues of over £70m a year with Operating Profits of £10m+. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the BMA and operates in over 40 countries with more than half the Group’s revenues coming from overseas.

Apart from the BMJ, its flagship title, it has over 40 specialist medical journals, such as Heart, GUT, Thorax, Archives of Disease in Childhood and Annals of Rheumatic Diseases and is a world leader in e-Learning and continuous professional development for doctors and other healthcare professionals. It is also joint owner with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of the BNF (the British National Formulary).

Recent innovations include BMJ Best Practice, a decision support tool available to doctors on mobile phones, and over a year ago it entered the software and systems area with the acquisition of specialist company, Informatica Systems.

After 10 years as a BMA appointed medical non-executive director (one of three BMA appointments) and deputy chairman of the BMJ Group, Dr Brian Keighley is retiring from the Board and we are seeking his replacement.

In particular, we are looking for a candidate with wide experience of BMA policies and procedures who can assist in liaison between the BMJ Group and its parent organisation. Demonstrable business and financial skills and knowledge of primary and/or secondary care financing and procurement procedures would also be valuable.

The initial term is for three years with eligibility for re-election.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by a panel representing the BMA and the BMJ Group and a recommendation will be made to the Council of the BMA for appointment and subsequent election by the BMJ Group Board.

The Board meets usually in London seven times a year with occasional additional attendance by phone and attendance at a two-day strategy meeting.

Applications are invited from members of the BMA who are eligible in law to be a director for the appointment to take place in November, 2012, when the current member demits. Interviews will take place in late September.
