NHS Derby City and NHS Derbyshire County Council

Director of Public Health

Salary: Competitive (VSM or Consultant salary scale)

Location: Matlock, Derbyshire

A new challenging opportunity has arisen for a highly able Director of Public Health (DPH) for Derbyshire, one of the most beautiful and diverse counties in the UK. It has a population of around three-quarters of a million people, within a range of large and small towns and rural villages. There are significant areas of deprivation in both urban and rural areas, as well as areas of affluence, which makes this a challenging yet highly rewarding place to work.

We have a very strong Public Health Team, with many links and partnerships across Derbyshire, at both County level and second tier local authorities. This has helped us have a significant impact on the health of the local community with some excellent innovative practice throughout the County. Derbyshire County Council is a consistently high performing local authority with an enviable reputation for delivering the highest quality of services, together with its partners across the County.

The Council and NHS are working closely to implement the NHS reforms, in particular, the transition of Public Health from the NHS to the Council. The transition will ensure that Public Health staff and expertise is available to other emerging organisations, including our Clinical Commissioning Groups and Public Health England. We have already established a Shadow Health and Wellbeing Board, with early implementer status.

NHS Derbyshire and Derbyshire County Council are fully committed to taking forward the new public health agenda. We want to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic Director of Public Health with exceptional leadership skills to lead and energise our ambitions. The successful candidate will be a visionary and motivational leader, politically astute and able to influence across different organisational cultures, combined with the skills and sensitivity to lead in a complex and dynamic environment. The post-holder will report to the Chief Executives of the Derbyshire Health Cluster and County Council until Public Health transfers to Derbyshire County Council, which is due to take place in 2013.
