We are looking for two enthusiastic Cardiologists to develop our Echocardiography, Cardiac Imaging and Heart Failure services at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust (SaTH). We have recently appointed a Consultant with an interest in Devices and Heart Failure, we are looking for candidates whose skills and interests would complement and grow our existing Service, developing and expanding our existing Echocardiography Service and developing our Cardiac CT and Cardiac MRI Services in the future.
These are both effectively new posts, although we do have a Consultant retiring who has been working part time. You will join an existing team of seven Consultants serving a 500,000 population in Shropshire, Telford and North Wales. Although both posts will have a cross county commitment, one will have inpatient responsibilities at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, whilst the other will be primarily based at and have inpatient responsibilities at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
In addition to these currently advertised posts, we have recently appointed a Consultant Cardiologist with an interest in Device Therapy. We envisage there will be close co-operative working between all new appointees and existing Consultants to develop truly excellent Imaging and Heart Failure Services. Both new appointees will also be active members of the General Cardiology Service provided by SaTH, and will have a 1:7 on-call commitment for Cardiology. There is no General Medical commitment associated with this post.
The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital has a seven bed Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and at present 32 other Cardiology beds, which often have a mix of Cardiology and GIM patients. This is shortly to be reduced to 12 beds, which will be dedicated to Cardiology. There are 2.8 whole time equivalent Consultants. The Princess Royal Hospital has a 5 bedded CCU, a 20 bed Cardiology Ward and a dedicated day case area. There are 3.2 whole time equivalent Consultants. At present three Interventional Cardiologists have sessions at Regional PCI Centres. There are current plans for major development of the Cardiology Service within SaTH to repatriate PCI Services locally and develop our Imaging services locally. Consultants on both sites are supported by Junior Doctors and a dedicated team of Specialist Nurses, efficient secretarial support and an excellent Cardiorespiratory Department.
Shropshire is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers extensive outdoor recreational facilities. There is easy access to North Wales and the Welsh Coast. The M54 motorway starts just outside Shrewsbury and provides a rapid link to the national motorway network. Housing standards are high in the county with good local state and private schools. You must be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register or be within six months of your expected Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology or equivalent at the time of interview.
