Applications are invited for a full time Consultant post in Clinical Oncology which, while based at Glangwili General Hospital Carmarthen, will also involve weekly sessional work in the Cancer Centre in Singleton Hospital, Swansea.
This post is appointed Health Board wide. Your principal place of employment will be Glangwili General Hospital, although other working locations including off site working may be agreed in your job plan where appropriate. Job plans and appraisals will also take part jointly with ABM.
There are already excellent links with the Consultant Oncologists working in Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Local Health Board, and it is expected that even closer co-operation and joint working will be developed in the coming years. The Chemotherapy Department of Glangwili Hospital is a modern, purpose designed Unit which has recently been further extended and fully equipped to provide the following facilities: 14 Treatment Spaces; three Consulting Rooms; two Examination Rooms.
There are currently 40-50 Oncology and Haematology patients treated every week with Chemotherapy and targeted Anti-cancer treatments (Monoclonal Antibodies, Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors). Treatments for Solid Tumours given in Glangwili General Hospital currently cover Lung Cancer, Upper and Lower GI Cancers, and Breast and Urology Cancers. There is also PICC Insertion Service provided for patients on Chemotherapy. Singleton Hospital houses a very busy Oncology Department that works closely with the Surgical and Medical specialties at Singleton and Morriston Hospitals, and additionally provides Sub-regional Services covering hospitals in the remainder of the ABM University Health Board, and the Hywel Dda Health Board area in South West Wales and parts of Mid Wales (Powys). There is particularly close co-operation between the Surgeons, Physicians and Oncologists involved in the treatment of all cancers. The Department of Radiology plays a major part in supporting these services, working closely with the Clinicians involved.
There are 40 Oncology/Haematology beds at Singleton Hospital based on wards 11 and 12. There are also ten hostel beds located on the top floor of Singleton Hospital (Hostel Gwelfor) for self-caring patients receiving Radiotherapy.
Singleton Hospital has modern diagnostic Radiology and Pathology departments with all the subspecialties required for Cancer Services. The Sub-regional Medical Physics Department is also sited in Singleton, and has very strong links with the Department of Oncology and with the University. The Department of Nuclear Medicine accommodates an Isotopes Unit that provides most of the necessary Isotopes for Diagnosis and Therapy. Patients requiring PET scans currently travel to Cheltenham, but soon this service will be available in Cardiff.
Each of the Oncology Consultants based at Singleton Hospital have special interests and are a part of Tumour Specific Multidisciplinary Teams, in addition to providing a General Oncological Service for a specific geographical area.
We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic well qualified Consultant who will preferably have experience in Urological and Colorectal Cancer sites and is committed to further developing and enhancing Oncology Services within Carmarthenshire, the wider Health Board and South West Wales.
Hywel Dda Health Board is the new healthcare organisation formed on 1st October 2009 to replace Hywel Dda NHS Trust, Pembrokeshire Local Health Board, Ceredigion Local Health Board and Carmarthenshire Local Health Board, and will provide Primary, Secondary, Community and Mental Health and Learning Disability Healthcare for the people of Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire - effectively the whole of mid and South West Wales, to a population of around 372,320 people across the three counties, and management of four Acute Hospitals: Withybush General Hospital; West Wales General Hospital; Bronglais General Hospital; and Prince Philip Hospital.
The Health Board recognises the importance of Continuing Medical Education/Professional Development and, as part of the job plan, the successful candidate will be required to Participate in Continuing Medical Education. There are excellent Postgraduate and Clinical Audit facilities on all sites.
West Wales is an area of outstanding natural beauty which includes the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, the Brecon Beacons and the Gower Peninsula. It offers a variety of outdoor pursuits including walking, horse riding, fishing, sailing, surfing and cycling. Carmarthen is the oldest town in Wales, and has been continuously inhabited since Roman times. Reasonable property prices and excellent state schools contribute to low living costs and a high quality of life. There are also excellent road and rail connections to Cardiff and London.
