The Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown dependency within the British Isles with a locally funded Health Service. The population is approximately 85,000. Terms and Conditions of Service are similar to the United Kingdom National Agreements. From 1 April 2012 a new Isle of Man Government Unified Scheme was introduced. The new Consultant Contract framework has been adopted on the Island, with important variations such as automatic inclusion of discretionary points in the salary scale equivalent to the first nine UK CEAs, Category A on-call supplements for all eligible Consultants undertaking on-call and no requirement to offer additional hours to the NHS prior to undertaking private practice.

The Surgical Division is one of 5 Divisions within Noble’s Hospital and includes General Surgery, ITU, Anaesthetics, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Surgical Specialties (including Breast service, Dental and Maxillofacial surgery, Ophthalmology and Urology) and Accident and Emergency. The Divisional management team is lead by the Clinical Director and Divisional Manager, supported by lead clinicians from the various specialties.

The Surgical Unit consists of two 20 bedded Wards and a Day Procedure Suite, with Endoscopy Suite. There is a dedicated Surgical Outpatient Clinic suite. There is access to all main radiological modalities on site including MRI, CT and nuclear medicine.

The post

This is a replacement post for a consultant general surgeon with a special interest in gastrointestinal surgery and laparoscopy and is based at Noble’s Hospital. The post-holder will be one of 4 consultant general surgeons who all have special interests. The job comprises 10 programmed activities (PA) of which 7.5 PA is for Direct Clinical Care (DCC), there are 2.5 PA for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).

There is an on call commitment of 1:4 and additional PAs will be available for the successful candidate.
