Consultant Bariatric Surgeon

Substantive appointment

An opportunity is available to join a team of committed upper GI surgeons in one of the UK’s newer teaching hospitals. This is a new post developed to support the expanding workload of the department as a result of our successful designation as a Bariatric Surgery centre in 2011.

UHNS has a busy tertiary Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary service and our 5 Consultants, supported by colleagues from Stafford, Leighton and Wolverhampton hospitals, manage a full range of cancer and benign conditions. This includes the provision of a specialist cancer services to a tertiary population of approximately 1.6 million and the more recent development of a bariatric service. The team is supported by a Bariatric Specialist Nurse, Upper GI Cancer Specialist Nurses and an Enhanced Recovery Nurse. The hospital also has a busy emergency surgical service supported by a Surgical Assessment Unit.

The hospital has recently opened new Upper GI theatres as part of a £350 million building scheme to modernise the Trust and is a Major Trauma Centre.

The post holder will be instrumental in maintaining current patient access targets, and will be expected to carry out operating sessions and out-patient sessions, in addition to participating in the surgical on call service. The Trust houses a large multidisciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate training centre. There are close links with the University of Keele, and members of the General Surgery Directorate participate fully in the undergraduate teaching programme.

Applicants must be registered with the GMC, be a specialist registrar or suitably qualified surgeon with experience in bariatric surgery. The ideal candidate will also have an interest in, or will be willing to develop an interest in, oesophago-gastric cancer surgery. The on call commitments include a contribution to an emergency rota consisting of 10 surgical colleagues.
