IPSWICH HOSPITAL NHS TRUST

Consultant in Stroke Medicine

Ipswich Hospital is an exciting place to be in Stroke Medicine due to significant new investment. The Trust has the second busiest stroke service and is among the highest performers against stroke and TIA metrics in the Anglian Region. We currently treat around 700 acute stroke and 600 TIA patients per annum. New investment has enabled the service to provide three whole-time equivalent Stroke Physicians (including this post), a new post of Specialty Doctor in Stroke Medicine and a newly appointed Stroke Lead Nurse. The service has also provided 14 additional stroke beds (totalling 36 beds for acute stroke care and rehabilitation), increased the TIA service from five to seven days a week and extended the thrombolysis service to 24/7 with the support of telemedicine.

The post includes an optional on call commitment for general medicine (currently 1 in 18), supported by a seven day a week acute medicine consultant in the admissions unit. We are a teaching hospital affiliated to the University of Cambridge, the University of East Anglia and University Campus Suffolk and encourage applicants who are able to continue our strong education programme. Ipswich Hospital is part of the Comprehensive Local Research Network for Norfolk and Suffolk and research is actively encouraged.

Ipswich itself offers all the advantages of urban living with easy access to the beautiful county of Suffolk and over 50 miles of coastline. Reasonable house prices and an excellent choice of both state and private sector schools in the area make this an ideal family home. There are numerous villages within easy driving distance of the hospital for those who prefer a rural setting. There are plenty of local sports clubs to accommodate most interests and Ipswich has a vibrant cultural scene. Ipswich is linked to Cambridge and all areas of the United Kingdom by dual carriageway. London is easily accessible by rail with two trains an hour to London Liverpool Street and Stansted airport is just over one hours drive away.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of your CCT date at the time of your interview.
