ROYAL WOLVERHAMPTON HOSPITALS
Heart & Lung Centre, Wolverhampton
Devices lead and with a specialist interest in Electrophysiology
You will be joining a dynamic Network-wide team of 13 Cardiologists (including 7 visiting colleagues) delivering secondary cardiology services for the Wolverhampton population, and tertiary cardiology services for the Black Country and surrounding areas.
You will be lead and develop our comprehensive device service. This will include the implantation and follow-up of brady and tachycardia devices along with CRT devices. You will also work closely with our lead for Cardiac Electrophysiology to support and develop our expanding EP service. You will be expected to undertake duties in general cardiology for both inpatients and outpatients and participate in a 1:7 general on-call for cardiology. Any additional skills to complement the work of the department would be welcomed.
The Heart & Lung Centre is a purpose-built Cardiothoracic unit which opened in 2004 and serves the population of the Black Country and surrounding areas. Our Catheter Laboratories include a dedicated EP lab along with a separate Pacing Theatre. We perform 1600 PCI procedures and 1000 cardiac operations annually and are also one of the UK’s largest Heart Attack Centres undertaking more than 500 primary PCI procedures every year. An active, highly successful and expanding TAVI programme is also in place. A full range of non-invasive investigations are available including cardiac MR, 3D echo, stress and transesophageal echo. The centre also has a very active research programme.
We have a large device programme with approximately 160 conventional bradycardia pacemakers and 80 complex devices implanted each year. The Trust has a well developed technician led follow-up clinic and technician led loop recorder implant service. We were the fi rst centre in the West Midlands to provide a remote monitoring facility for all our implanted devices and virtual outpatient clinics are also provided.
Working with University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire we are the third EP Service in the West Midlands with a Consultant Electrophysiologist at both sites. The number of ablation procedures performed in Wolverhampton has rapidly grown from 60 in the fi rst year of the service (2010/11) to 255 last year (2011/12). With a high prevalence of cardiac disease locally it is anticipated that these annual activity levels will continue to grow for some time to come. You will contribute fully to this expansion.
