Reference: 153-M2114
Applications are invited for a whole-time Consultant Interventional Cardiologist to start by October 2012. There is a need to appoint a fifth fully trained Coronary Interventionist to join the nine existing Cardiologists, four of whom are interventionists, to provide a 24-hour Primary PCI service. An on-call PPCI rota of 1:7 is anticipated incorporating two interventional colleagues from Salisbury NHS Trust.
This is a full time post in Coronary Intervention; like the existing Cardiologists there are no General Medical Commitments. The PCI Service based at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital NHS Trust covers most of Dorset, and parts of Hampshire and Wiltshire, a catchment of one million. Patients with ST elevation Myocardial Infarction currently receive primary PCI during daytime hours but Thrombolyis at night with facility for rescue PCI as necessary.
Primary PCI was initiated in 2006 for nine to vie weekdays and a 24-hour Rescue PCI service started in January 2011. The Cardiac Intervention Unit opened in 2005 and houses four dedicated Cardiac catheter labs for diagnostic catheterisation, PCI (2 labs) and also a comprehensive Electrophysiology service for Dorset. In 2011 there were 2,140 PCI procedures of which 1,771 had lesion treatment, 52% were non-Elective and 73% were Transradial procedures. Integrated IVUS and pressure wire were used in 25% and 38% of cases respectively. OCT, dedicated bifurcation stents, rotational and laser Atherectomy are performed routinely. There is a successful CTO programme. A Videoconference system is newly installed and the Coronary Care Unit extension will open later this year. There are two Cardiac Radiologists and there are 2CT and 2MRI state of the art scanners within a recently purpose -built suite. Of the related specialties, there are sub-regional services in interventional radiology (two dedicated labs) and Vascular Surgery.
The Royal Bournemouth Hospital fully opened in 1992 and is built on two levels on an extensive green field site close to the main roads linking up with the New Forest, Southampton, Salisbury, Christchurch and Poole. The hospital is situated in a major tourist area, and, during the summer months, over one million holidaymakers visit Bournemouth. It is a university town with a high student population including substantial numbers of foreign language students.
The fluctuating population, three times greater growth than the average for England and Wales, and the high proportion of Elderly present special challenges for Health Care.
