Full time
Shifts 1:8 (see below for details)

The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust provides a county-wide Trauma and Elective Orthopaedic Surgery service to a population of approximately 650,000 people. Acute Services are provided at Pilgrim Hospital, Boston, Lincoln County Hospital, Grantham and District Hospital and County Hospital, Louth.
This is a new post to join a well established department of 7 Consultants, taking the number to 8. The Consultants work a 1:8 week on-call rota when all Elective commitments are cancelled and replaced with Fracture Clinics and Trauma lists. The Consultants also cover an Associate Specialist on-call in turn, thus making it a 1:8 week on-call rota except the 56th week when the individual covers the Associate Specialist. The Department also consists of 4 Associate Specialists, 4 Specialty Doctors, 3 Specialist Registrars from the Leicester rotation, 8 FY2 Doctors and 4 FY1 Doctors. Medical Students from Leicester are regularly taught in the Department.
Pilgrim Hospital is a busy, expanding District General Hospital. The geography of the county will ensure its expansion and the Trust has recognised and actively encouraged this. The Orthopaedic Department has three dedicated clean air theatres, separate Trauma and Elective wards, an Arthroplasty Unit with ring fenced, MRSA-screened beds and a Trauma Stabilisation Unit. The Department has actively participated in various Modernisation Initiatives and benefited in numerous tangible developments such as the third Clean-Air Theatre from Action-On funds. The Department is committed to new developments such as Nurse led Pre-Assessment Clinics, Trauma Co-ordinators and Nurse led Fracture follow-up, Nurse-Practitioner led Arthroplasty follow-up and Elective Surgery Co-ordinator/Discharge Liaison Nurses. The theatres are equipped with a range of implants and Trauma products seldom matched in other District General Hospitals.
The successful candidate should have completed Higher Surgical Training in Orthopaedic Surgery and must hold the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in this specialty, or be on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register. Applicants within 3 months of obtaining the CCST by the interview date will be considered. The successful candidate will be offered the New Consultant Contract and the exact number of Programmed Activities (if in excess of 10) will be discussed and agreed with the appointee. A provisional timetable is available for the post. There is a commitment for the post to hold theatre and outpatient clinic sessions at Louth (supported by Junior Medical staff), about 34 miles from Boston, on a weekly basis except during the on-call week.
Boston is a pleasant market town in the south of the County with excellent state schools, both primary and Grammar/Comprehensive. A wide variety of high quality housing, reasonably priced in comparison to the rest of the country, is available.
Informal enquiries are encouraged. Please contact Mr J A S Watson, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Lead, via his Secretary, telephone 01205 445706, Mrs Sarah Brown, General Manager, telephone 01205 445456, Mr Alex Afifi, Clinical Services Manager, Planned Care, telephone 01205 446605 or Mrs Ali Vernon, Assistant Clinical Services Manager, Planned Care, telephone 01205 445805.
Travelling expenses will be reimbursed for one visit for candidates selected for interview, unless requested specifically by management to attend at any other time. In cases of candidates travelling from abroad, expenses are normally only payable from point of entry to United Kingdom.
