Fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure (2 Posts)

Scottish Advanced Heart Failure Service

Ref: SHOW/0826

This Fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for clinical experience in advanced heart
failure and its specialist assessment and management. The successful candidates will
have the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, cardiac
surgeons, intensivists, and heart failure nurse specialists.

The Scottish Advanced Heart Failure Service (SAHfS) is an integrated part of the
West of Scotland Heart and Lung Centre at The Golden Jubilee National Hospital,
and incorporates the Scottish Cardiopulmonary Transplant Unit. There is a recently
established mechanical circulatory support programme. The unit works closely with
the local and regional cardiology and cardiac surgery services.

There are extensive research opportunities within the unit into novel and established
investigation and treatment strategies including new drugs, novel devices, the
epidemiology of advanced heart failure, valve disease and intervention in heart failure
including a nationally funded project on pulmonary vein isolation for atrial fi brillation in
heart failure. The unit has extensive access to cardiac MRI.

This post would be suitable for a range of applicants including those seeking a
research and clinical training opportunity prior to taking up or from within a current
specialty training post in cardiology. Applicants should aim to obtain a higher degree
during their tenure.

Applicants will be expected to hold an MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualifi cation, be
registered with the GMC, and have relevant experience in General (Internal) Medicine
and Cardiology. Experience with invasive procedures is desirable, but not essential,
as full training in right heart catheterisation, intra-aortic balloon pump insertion and
endomyocardial biopsy will be provided. As the three cardiologists responsible for
SAHfS also have sub-specialty interests in imaging, complex devices, and coronary
intervention, some exposure to these important aspects of cardiology may also be
offered, where appropriate.

For further information please contact Dr Mark Petrie ( or
Dr Roy Gardner ( of the Scottish Advanced Heart Failure
