THE ADVICE ZONE
I am a British-qualified doctor, who completed MRCP and then left to work in intensive care in Hong Kong for ten years. I have now returned to Berkshire and wish to change specialty, preferably moving into general practice. Which deanery gives the best information and where else can I find advice?

You are likely to be on the overseas register of the General Medical Council (www.gmc-uk.org), and you will be eligible for full registration, but you will need to find out how you apply for this and pay the necessary fee.
You will need to contact the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (www.pmetb.org.uk), who can advise you as to which of your jobs and experience could count towards vocational training in general practice and what further training you will be required to do. The Royal College of General Practitioners' new membership examination (nMRCGP) will become compulsory as the route of entry to general practice as a specialty from August 2007. Further details regarding this are available on their website: www.rcgp.org.uk.
When you have had a reply from the PMETB, it will be helpful to look at the Modernising Medical Careers' website (www.mmc.nhs.uk), which will provide you with further information on requirements for GP training.
Finally, it is important to contact the postgraduate medical education deanery that is closest to where you live for further advice about gaining posts in GP vocational training. Details of deanery websites may be found through www.copmed.org.uk/contacts.
