Management and leadership for doctors

Currently in the NHS clinicians are encouraged to be clinical leaders and managers. The introduction of the NHS reforms and the new NHS clinical leadership competency framework supports this drive for doctors to develop skills in managing people and limited resources and to develop leadership skills.
The management and leadership for doctors course, run by ISC Medical, is designed to help clinicians to develop managerial skills and to teach them how to work together with medical managers to provide the best service for patients. It also covers techniques for clinicians to become more effective leaders.
Who is it for?
This course is designed to benefit a wide variety of doctors, whether general practitioners or hospital trainees, ranging from foundation doctors to consultants. Doctors who would benefit the most from the course are those who interact with managers on a regular basis and senior clinicians who act as clinical leaders.
Why did you do it?
I went on the course to learn more about the role of medical managers and to understand how to get the most out of my interactions with them. As I have progressed through my training I have taken on more responsibilities and have had to lead more junior trainees. I thought that developing skills in this field would help me get the best from the people I work with.
How was it structured?
This two day course has a maximum of 16 candidates and two instructors, a different one for each of the days. Courses are run on an almost two monthly basis and are based in central London.
The first day focuses on management, with formal teaching on different management techniques used in business and relating these to healthcare. Candidates learn how to negotiate with managers and work together to improve services. Teaching is through lectures and small group activities.
The second day covers medical leadership. Here, the clinical leadership competency framework is introduced, and methods to develop competencies in line with the framework are discussed. We also covered NHS issues and changes to the modern NHS, which helped explain the challenges that the NHS will face in the future.
How were candidates assessed?
There was no formal examination or evaluation at the end of the course.
How much did it cost?
The fee was £395 for two days.
Was it worth it?
Yes. I believe that I have gained a much better understanding of NHS issues and the future of the NHS. The negotiation skills taught on the course have been useful when trying to effect changes with management, and the leadership methods have made me reflect on my leadership style.
I would recommend this course to anyone who has an interest in taking on management responsibilities within medicine and to those who want to effect changes in their place of work but are unsure how to go about it.
