Voluntary Service Overseas raises pension prospects for volunteers
Publication date: 16 Apr 2008
Doctors and other public sector employees who volunteer to work for Voluntary Service Overseas may be eligible for pension reimbursements covering the period while they are overseas.
According to the voluntary organisation, some public servants have been reluctant to take a career break because of the impact on their pensions. But under the new scheme the government will add pension benefits once the volunteer returns home. A total of £13m has been made available for the payments for anyone volunteering from now until 2011.
